Android 2.2 will Include Tethering and WiFi hotspot
The upcoming version of Google’s mobile operating system Android will include USB tethering and have the availability to create ad-hoc WiFi networks.
With the help of USB tethering users would be able to use their phones as modems and connect them to a lot of devices. This will delight the users but would also upset a lot of mobile operators who charge money for such services. O2 charges a minimum of £10 per month for the service which includes a 3GB of bandwidth. The spokesperson said that its data tariff for iPhone has no limits and they would enjoy a lot more than 3GB data transfer.
The mobile operators are not worried about the tethering service much what is bothering them is the introduction of ad-hoc wireless network. It will open avenues for voice over IP (VOIP) applications like Skype and Fring which need WiFi connectivity to make calls. But with android’s latest offering they will work through other subscriber’s hotspots and would eliminate the need for mobile operator’s voice service. This would hit the operator’s revenue hugely.
Looking at the attitude of mobile manufacturers like Sony who do not show a very welcoming attitude towards upgrades it seems Nexus one could be the first to upgrade itself to android 2.2.

BT and O2 agree network consolidation deal
Bundle provider BT and its former cellular arm O2, which is now a part of Telefonica, have agreed upon a deal by which the BT will help to improve the network capabilities of rival broadband company O2.
The consolidation is looked upon positively by both the companies considering the rising levels of data traffic. Also, it is hoped that such an approach will allow O2 to improve the quality of next generation communications services that are available to its customers.
BT already provides core network management support for O2 on the mobile side, as well as a managed network service for the cellco's fixed and broadband services for businesses. The multimillion pound managed services deal is one of a series of wins for BT Wholesale. BT says it will enable O2 to handle the data explosion far more flexibly, and support a wide range of highly targeted next generation applications.
The interesting part is that the O2 has planned to sell fixed line phone services from next month and thus it indicates the changing patterns of the telecom market.
Overall it’s good news from the consumer’s point of view as they will also be benefited with this move because it will allow the company to offer its consumers with new bundles combining phone packages with broadband!
